Introduction: Infective vaginal discharge is the most common complaint of the women of reproductive age group attending gynaecology outpatient department. Vaginal discharge may be normal or abnormal. Infective vaginal discharge is usually related to one of the three conditions, like bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, and trichomoniasis. This study aimed to find out the prevalence of infective vaginal discharge among women of the reproductive age in the outpatient department of a primary care centre. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among women of the reproductive age group visiting the outpatient Department of the primary care hospital from 1 March 2022 to 1 August 2022 after obtaining ethical approval from the Institutional Review Committee. A convenience sampling method was used. The point estimate was calculated at a 95% Confidence Interval. Results: Among 138 patients, infective vaginal discharge was found in 42 (30.43%) (21.32-39.54, 95% Confidence Interval). Bacterial vaginosis was seen in 22 (52.38%), Candida was seen in 13 (30.95%), and Trichomonas was seen in 7 (16.66%) cases. Conclusions: The prevalence of infective vaginal discharge was lower as compared to other studies done in similar settings. Keywords: bacterial; candidiasis; prevalence; vaginitis.

Background: Women living with HIV (WLWH) are often coinfected with Trichomonas vaginalis (TV), and annual screening is recommended. Our goal was to assess differences in TV prevalence at study entry and over time in enrollment cohorts of the Women's Interagency HIV Study. Methods: In a multisite study, TV was diagnosed by wet mount microscopy. Prevalence was determined across four enrollment waves: 1994-1995, 2001-2002, 2011-2012, and 2013-2015. Generalized estimating equation multivariable logistic regression models assessed changes in visit prevalence across waves after controlling for HIV disease severity and other risks. Results: At 63,824 person-visits (3,508 WLWH and 1,262 women without HIV), TV was diagnosed by wet mount at 1979 visits (3.1%). After multivariable adjustment, HIV status was not associated with TV detection, which was more common among younger women, women with multiple partners, and irregular condom use. All enrollment waves showed a decline in TV detection over time, although p-value for trend did not reach significance for most recent waves. To explore the potential utility of screening among WLWH, we assessed rates of TV detection among women without appreciable vaginal discharge on examination. Initial TV prevalence among asymptomatic women was 3.5%, and prevalence decreased to 0.5%-1% in the most recent wave (2013-2015) (p-trend <0.0001). Conclusions: In this cohort, TV rates are low among WLWH, and HIV does not increase TV risk. Screening may benefit newly diagnosed WLWH, women with risk factors, or those receiving care sporadically but is unlikely to further reduce the low rate of TV among women in care, especially older women without multiple partners. The failures in Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) infection diagnosis leave more than half of cases unidentified. In this report, urine and vaginal discharge samples were analyzed by wet mount, culture examination, and real-time PCR by Allplex™ (Seegene®) kit, in a population assisted by the Brazilian Public Health System. From 747 samples, 2.81% were positive for TV in wet mount and culture, and 3.88% by Allplex™. Samples kept at - 80 ºC for 22 months did not impair the PCR technique. The sensitivity for wet mount, culture, and Allplex™ was 72, 100, and 100%, respectively. Allplex™ technique showed highest detection of TV.

BACKGROUND: Infectious vaginitis is one of the most prevalent conditions affecting women of reproductive age with significant clinical consequences. Bacterial vaginosis (BV), vulvo-vaginal candidiasis (VVC), and trichomoniasis (TV) are the main etiologies. Unfortunately, there is limited data on the prevalence and associated risk factors, especially in sub-saharan Africa. This study, thus, determined the prevalence and risk factors of infectious vaginitis among women seeking reproductive health services at a Marie-stopes health facility in urban areas of Kampala, Uganda. METHODS: A cross-sectional study with 361 participants was conducted from July to October 2021. Data on risk factors and infection were collected via a structured questionnaire and laboratory analysis of vaginal swabs, respectively, with data analysis performed using Stata version 14.0 college station, Texas 77,845 US. RESULTS: The ages of participants ranged from 18 to 49 years, with a mean age of 29.53 years. Overall, 58.45% were infected, of whom 33.24% had VVC, 24.93% had BV, and 0.28% had TV. Bivariate analysis revealed that women with pruritus (COR: 3.057, 95% CI: 1.940-4.819), pregnancy (COR: 4.914, 95% CI: 1.248-19.36), antibiotic use (COR: 1.592, 95% CI: 1.016-2.494), douching (COR: 1.719, 95% CI: 1.079-2.740), and multiple partners (COR: 1.844, 95% CI: 1.079-2.904) were more likely to have VVC, whereas having higher education status (University; Vocational) (COR: 0.325, 95% CI: 0.134-0.890; COR: 0.345, 95% CI: 0.116-0.905) reduced the risk. On the other hand, women with a smelly discharge (COR: 1.796, 95% CI: 1.036-3.110), IUD use (COR: 1.868, 95% CI: 1.039-3.358), and antibiotic use (COR: 1.731, 95% CI: 1.066-2.811) were more likely to have BV. Multivariable analysis identified pruritus (AOR: 2.861, 95% CI: 1.684-4.863) as the only independent predictor for VVC. CONCLUSION: Results indicate a high prevalence of infection among these women; therefore regular screening and treatment is recommended to curb the high rate of infection. More studies on risk factors of infection are recommended.

BACKGROUND: Trichomoniasis is the most prevalent nonviral sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Numerous studies have shown disproportionately higher prevalence rates in non-Hispanic Black women. Because of the high rates of reinfection, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends retesting women treated for trichomoniasis. Despite these national guidelines, there are few studies examining adherence to retesting recommendations for patients with trichomoniasis. Adherence to retesting guidelines has been shown in other infections to be an important determinant of racial disparities. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe Trichomonas vaginalis infection rates, evaluate adherence to retesting guidelines, and examine characteristics of women who were not retested according to the guidelines in an urban, diverse, hospital-based obstetrics and gynecology clinic population. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients from a single hospital-based obstetrics and gynecology clinic who were tested for Trichomonas vaginalis between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2019. Descriptive statistics were used to examine guideline-concordant testing for reinfection among patients with trichomoniasis. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify characteristics associated with testing positive and with appropriate retesting. Subgroup analyses were performed for patients who were pregnant and tested positive for Trichomonas vaginalis. RESULTS: Among the 8809 patients tested for Trichomonas vaginalis, 799 (9.1%) tested positive at least once during the study. Factors associated with trichomoniasis included identifying as non-Hispanic Black (adjusted odds ratio, 3.13; 95% confidence interval, 2.52-3.89), current or former tobacco smoking (adjusted odds ratio, 2.27; 95% confidence interval, 1.94-2.65), and single marital status (adjusted odds ratio, 1.96; 95% confidence interval, 1.51-2.56). Similar associated factors were found in the pregnant subgroup analysis. For women with trichomoniasis, guideline-concordant retesting rates were low across the entire population, with only 27% (214/799) of patients retested within the recommended time frame; 42% (82/194) of the pregnant subgroup underwent guideline-concordant retesting. Non-Hispanic Black women had significantly lower odds of undergoing guideline-recommended retesting than non-Hispanic White women (adjusted odds ratio, 0.54; 95% confidence interval, 0.31-0.92). Among patients tested according to guideline recommendations, we found a high rate of Trichomonas vaginalis positivity at retesting: 24% in the entire cohort (51/214) and 33% in the pregnant subgroup (27/82). CONCLUSION: Trichomonas vaginalis infection was identified at a high frequency in a diverse, urban hospital-based obstetrics and gynecology clinic population. Opportunities exist to improve on equitable and guideline-concordant retesting of patients with trichomoniasis.

BACKGROUND: Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) can be caused by viruses, bacteria, and parasites. The World Health Organization estimated more than 300 million new global cases of curable STIs among individuals of reproductive age. Infection by Trichomonas vaginalis is one of the most prevalent curable STI. Despite the current treatments available, the diagnosis of T. vaginalis can be difficult, and the resistance to the treatment increased concern for the healthcare system. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and factors associated with Trichomonas vaginalis infection among women of reproductive age attending community-based services for cervical screening. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 1477 reproductive-aged women attending 18 Primary Health Care Units in Botucatu, Brazil, from September to October 2012, were enrolled. A structured questionnaire was used for individual face-to-face interviews for obtaining data on sociodemographic, gynecologic, and obstetrics history, sexual and hygiene practices, among others. Cervicovaginal samples were obtained for detection of T. vaginalis by culture using Diamond's medium and microscopic vaginal microbiota classification according to Nugent. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was carried out to estimate Odds Ratios (OR) and 95% Confidence Intervals (95% CI) for the association between participants' sociodemographic, behavioral factors, and clinical factors with T. vaginalis infection. RESULTS: Median age of study participants was 33 years (ranging from 18 to 50). The overall prevalence of T. vaginalis infection was 1.3% (n = 20). Several factors were independently associated with T. vaginalis infection, such as self-reporting as black or Pardo for ethnicity (OR = 2.70; 95% CI 1.03‒7.08), smoking (OR=3.18; 95% CI 1.23‒8.24) and having bacterial vaginosis (OR = 4.01; 95%CI = 1.55-10.38) upon enrollment. A protective effect of higher educational level (having high school degree) was observed (OR = 0.16; 95% CI 0.05‒0.53). CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that screening programs to correctly detect T. vaginalis infection can be helpful to guide prevention strategies to the community. Our study supports an association between abnormal vaginal microbiota and T. vaginalis infection.

The aim of this paper is to describe the prevalence of Mycoplasma genitalium and Trichomonas vaginalis in patients who visited general practitioners in the Netherlands. Additionally, we describe the prevalence of M. genitalium resistance to azithromycin and moxifloxacin. We used data from 7,411 consecutive female patients who were screened for Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, M. genitalium, and T. vaginalis and data from 5,732 consecutive male patients screened for C. trachomatis, N. gonorrhoeae, and M. genitalium. The prevalence of M. genitalium and T. vaginalis in female patients was 6.7% (95% CI: 6.2 to 7.4) and 1.9% (95%CI: 1.6 to 2.2%), respectively. M. genitalium prevalence in male patients was 3.7% (3.3 to 4.3). M. genitalium co-occurred with C. trachomatis in 1.4% (0.3 to 0.6%) of female and in 0.7% (0.5 to 0.9) of male patients. Macrolide resistance gene mutations and fluoroquinolone resistance gene mutations were detected in 73.8% and 9.9%, respectively. We concluded that M.genitalium is relatively infrequently found in a large general practitioner population in the Netherlands. It can co-occur with C. trachomatis, and is often resistant to azithromycin. Therefore, when treating sexually transmitted infections, these prevalence and resistance data should be taken into account.

Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) may have an impact on other reproductive tract infections. Studies on the connection between the infection of TV and human papillomavirus (HPV) have been inconsistent. We performed a systematic review of the relevant articles through keywords that satisfy the criteria and filtered the articles according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 16 eligible studies were screened for the meta-analysis, involving a total of 150,605 women. RevMan 5.4 software was used for meta-analysis of the selected literatures. The results showed that the papers included in this study had good homogeneity and no significant publication bias was found in the current analysis. The pooled estimates using a fixed-effects model showed that TV was more prevalent in HPV-infected women than in non-infected women [odds ratio (OR): 1.51, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.29-1.75]; In turn, HPV was more widespread in TV-infected women than in uninfected women (OR: 3.62, 95% CI: 2.71-4.85). Moreover, the interaction between TV and HPV infection was insensitive to the deletion of some studies and correlation coefficients, consequently, the results were robust and reliable. These results suggested that TV is positively associated with HPV infection, and HPV is also a risk factor for TV infection.

BACKGROUND: Trichomonas vaginalis infection is the most prevalent non-viral sexually transmitted infection (STI) in women and has been suggested as a risk factor for developing cervical cancer. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the associations between T. vaginalis infection and cervical carcinogenesis. SEARCH STRATEGY: A comprehensive systematic search was conducted in five databases on 21 October 2021. SELECTION CRITERIA: Studies assessing the relationship between T. vaginalis infection, HPV co-infections, cervical dysplasia, and cervical cancer were found eligible. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Summary estimates for pooled odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated with a random-effects model. Statistical heterogeneity was measured with I2 and Cochran's Q tests. MAIN RESULTS: The 29 articles included 473 740 women, of whom 8518 were T. vaginalis-positive. Our results showed that T. vaginalis-infected women had 1.79 times higher odds of being diagnosed with HPV co-infection (95% CI 1.27-2.53; I2 95%). We also found that T. vaginalis infection was associated with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion diagnosis (OR 2.34, 95% CI 1.10-4.95; I2 75%) and cervical cancer (OR 5.23, 95% CI 3.03-9.04; I2 3%). CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed an association between T. vaginalis and cervical carcinogenesis in sexually active women.

Trichomoniasis (TV), bacterial vaginosis (BV), and vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) are the most common causes of vaginitis. This study investigated the prevalence of these diagnoses, their associated factors, and the appropriateness of the empirical treatment. From March 25, 2019, to June 17, 2022, 429 women with symptoms or signs of vaginitis were enrolled in a hospital in northern Taiwan with 438 episodes of vaginitis. Vaginal swabs were collected for Gram's staining, in vitro cultures for Trichomonas vaginalis, bacteria, and yeasts, and multiplex PCR assay for TV, BV, and VVC. Their empirical treatments were recorded. Factors associated with different etiologies of vaginitis were sought in multivariable logistic regression models. The prevalence of TV, BV, and VVC were 2.1%, 22.8%, and 21.7%, respectively, while coinfections of BV and VVC, TV and BV, TV and VVC, and triple infection occurred in 5.0%, 0.2%, 0.2%, and 0.7%, respectively. Multivariable analyses revealed that having multiple sexual partners was associated with TV and BV (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 9.756 and 3.246, respectively), while menopausal women were less likely to have VVC (aOR 0.184). Moreover, dysuria was associated with TV (aOR 4.981), vaginal itch and pelvic pain with VVC (aOR 3.223 and 0.425, respectively), and discharge pH > 4.5 with BV (aOR 1.767). Other clinical symptoms and pelvic examination features had limited value for differential diagnosis. Among the 78 empirical antifungal and metronidazole prescriptions, 55.2% were ineffective or unnecessary. Our study highlights the importance to integrate appropriate diagnostic tools into the clinical care of women with vaginitis. IMPORTANCE Vaginal complaints are widespread among women and are associated with emotional, physical, and economic burdens with challenges in their diagnosis and management. In this survey, we identified that 40% of vaginitis in Taiwan was caused by either trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, or a combination of these infections. Our data suggested that typical physical findings appeared infrequently among women with these infections and their empirical treatments were frequently inappropriate. Our findings highlighted the importance of integrating proper diagnostic tools into clinical practice to improve the diagnosis and management of vaginitis, as recommended by national and international guidelines.

The importance of its diagnosis lies in its ease of transmission and the absence of symptoms in most cases, as occurs in men, which have a significant role as asymptomatic carriers. The most widely used diagnostic methods are the fresh examination of vaginal or urethral secretions and molecular techniques. However, as they have some disadvantages and, sometimes, low sensitivity, new trichomoniasis diagnostic methods are necessary. Volatile organic compounds in clinical samples are effective in the diagnosis of different diseases. This work aimed to study, for the first time, those present in vaginal discharge and urine of patients with Trichomonas vaginalis infection to look for volatile biomarkers. The results showed that volatile compounds such as 2-methyl-1-propanol and cyclohexanone could serve as biomarkers in vaginal discharge samples, as well as 2-octen-1-ol and 3-nonanone in urine. Moreover, 3-hydroxy-2,4,4-trimethylpentyl 2-methylpropanoate found in vaginal discharge, highly correlated to positive patients, is also highly related to urines of patients with trichomoniasis. The biomarkers described in this study might be a promising diagnostic tool. OBJECTIVE: Infection with Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) is the most prevalent non-viral sexually transmitted infection in the world. The objective of the study was to investigate the incidence of TV infection and its association with Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in a sample of Egyptian females. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 96 Egyptian females suspected for trichomoniasis were involved in our study. Vaginal washouts and cervical (cytobrush) samples were obtained from all patients and examined for T. vaginalis by direct wet mount, modified Diamond's culture medium, and real-time PCR. Cervical (cytobrush) samples were examined for HPV using real-time PCR. RESULTS: Out of 96 patients, 28 (29%) was positive for T. vaginalis by real-time PCR. HPV was detected in 33 patients (34.4%); 31 cases (32.3%) were infected with HPV of genotype 16, whereas only two cases (2.1%) had genotype 18 infection. A significant association was found between TV and HPV infection [Odds ratio (OR)=10.58; 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.819 - 29.29; p<0.001]. CONCLUSIONS: When it comes to diagnosing trichomoniasis in a susceptible population, real-time PCR is more reliable than traditional standard approaches. A significant association between TV and HPV infection was found. Further research into the processes by which these two organisms interact at the cellular level could be revealed.

BACKGROUND: Trichomoniasis is a parasitic infection of the urinary and genital tract, caused by Trichomonas vaginalis. This study aimed to investigate the molecular diagnosis of T. vaginalis infection in liquid-based Papanicolaou samples in Shiraz, southern Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 534 liquid-based Papanicolaou samples were collected from women referring to the laboratory of Motahari Clinic of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in 2021. Genomic DNA were extracted from the samples and examined for evidence of T. vaginalis using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using TVK3 and TVK7 specific primers. RESULTS: The mean age of participants was 39.28 ± 9.89 with a maximum age of 65 and a minimum age of 19 years. T. vaginalis DNA fragments were detected in 4.86% (26/534) of the cases. There was significantly higher prevalence in the age groups of 21 to 30 and 41 to 50 years (46.15%, p = 0.001 and 38.46%, p = 0.015, respectively). Furthermore, the results showed an association between a history of foamy discharge and Trichomonas positivity (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: T. vaginalis infection is common in liquid-based Papanicolaou samples of women who attended regular health check-ups in the study area. Screening for trichomoniasis in populations, particularly if using highly sensitive methods such as PCR, may lead to increased detection and treatment.

Trichomonas vaginalis (T. vaginalis) infection is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections worldwide and is associated with several complications. However, the paucity of research regarding the prevalence of T. vaginalis infection in the Tibetan area limits control efforts. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of T. vaginalis infection in the Tibetan area by a comparison with the prevalence of T. vaginalis in Wuhan city and to unveil the potential risk factors in the Tibetan area. This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted among adult women attending gynecology outpatient clinics in two public hospitals (one in Shannan city of Tibet and one in Wuhan city) in China in 2020. Data were retrieved from the medical record system and laboratory information management system, including T. vaginalis infection, bacterial vaginosis, and vulvovaginal candidiasis by wet mount microscopy or nucleic acid hybridization of vaginal secretions from patients. The associations of variables associated with T. vaginalis prevalence were quantified by odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals. The overall prevalence rates of T. vaginalis infection in the Tibetan area and Wuhan city were 20.94% and 2.84%, respectively. The statistically significant factors for the higher prevalence of T. vaginalis infection in the Tibetan area included tertiary educational status (AOR: 0.36 [95% CI: 0.16-0.81]), yearly family income > ¥100,000 (AOR: 0.48 [95% CI: 0.26-0.91]), clinical symptoms (AOR: 4.58[95% CI: 2.32-9.04]), and III-IV grade vaginal cleanliness (AOR: 29.71 [95% CI: 3.95-223.56]) in the multivariate logistic analysis. Interventions targeting improved living standards as well as women's educational level and promoting reproductive hygiene habits are recommended to contribute to the reduction in T. vaginalis infection in the Tibetan area.

Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) is the most common non-viral sexually transmitted infection (STI) microaerophilic protist parasite, which is the causative agent of trichomonosis. Globally, the estimated annual incidence is more than 270 million cases. It is correlated for several health problems including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), pregnancy miscarriages, cervical carcinoma, prostatitis, prostatic adenocarcinomas, infertility, and the acquisition of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Most individuals infected with TV are asymptomatic. Metronidazole (MTZ) has been the treatment of choice for women. Currently, there is no effective vaccine against this pathogen despite efforts at vaccine development. Different socio-economic, demographic, behavioral, and biological factors are associated with the disease. Apart from its role as a pathogenic agent of diseases, it is also a fascinating organism with a surprisingly large genome for a parasite, i.e. larger than 160 Mb, and physiology adapted to its microaerophilic lifestyle. Particularly, the hydrogenosome, a mitochondria-derived organelle that releases hydrogen, attracted much interest in the last decades and rendered TV a model organism for eukaryotic evolution. According to the high prevalence and health consequences associated with TV, there is a requirement for improved screening programs in Iraq. The early diagnosis of asymptomatic diseases and effective treatment regimens are mandatory. Despite being highly prevalent of trichomonosis in the world, there is no review research published that solely focuses on T. vaginalis infections in Iraq.

Trichomonas vaginitis (TV) is the most common non-viral sexually transmitted infection (STI) worldwide. The high prevalence of TV combined with mild or asymptomatic early symptoms leads to clinical vulnerability from delayed diagnosis. Latent infection can increase the incidence of pelvic infections, infertility, and adverse pregnancy complications. Data from 898 women who underwent vaginal flora testing from June 2014 to December 2014 were used to create a nomogram to assess the risk of TV in women in order to guide TV prevention and clinical intervention. The prediction model was evaluated in terms of identification, calibration, and clinical utility using the C-index, calibration plots, decision curve analysis, and internal validation. Predictors in the TV nomogram included age, occupation, yearly income, tea drinking, bathing frequency, menopause, spontaneous abortion, use of contraceptives, history of gynecological surgery, and HPV infection. The C-index of the TV risk prediction model was 0.732 (95% confidence interval: 0.695-0.768). It showed good discriminatory and predictive power. Decision curve analysis indicated that the nomogram had a good net benefit when the threshold probability of TV in women was 2-80%. The established TV prediction model easily, accurately, and quickly predicts the risk of TV onset.

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of and risk factors associated with BV(bacterial vaginosis, BV), VVC (vulvovaginal candidiasis, VVC) and TV (trichomonal vaginitis, TV) among non-pregnant women. Among 770 women included in analyses, surveyed using a questionnaire and subsequently diagnosed with BV, VVC and TV via Gram staining and vaginal swab microscopy. Vaginal infections were prevalent in 31.30%, with BV being the most prevalent (21.35%). Single-variable analysis revealed that an age of 20-29 years (odds ratio [OR] = 2.31, 95% CI: 1.24-4.29; p = .007) and lack of education (OR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.28-0.89; p = .018) were significantly associated with BV. However, an age of 30-39 years was significantly associated with VVC (OR = 2.12, 95% CI: 1.03-4.38; p = .038). Multivariable analysis confirmed that miscarriage was an independent predictor of BV and VVC. Miscarriage was significantly associated with the incidence of BV and VVC (OR = 1.680, 95% CI: 1.146-2.462; p = .011 and OR = 2.04, 95% CI: 1.30-3.20; p = .002, respectively). In conclusion, BV appears to be the predominant cause of vaginitis, risk factors for vaginitis include age and level of education and miscarriage.IMPACT STATEMENTWhat is already known on this subject? Inflammation of the vagina, or vaginitis, is caused by various infectious and non-infectious factors. The most common causes of infectious vaginitis are BV, VVC and TV. Kunming located at the southwestern border of China, However, there is still no systematic research investigating the status of vaginitis infection in Yunnan Province. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the prevalence of these vaginal infections; BV, VVC, and TV, among women of childbearing age, and to assess the prevalence of vaginal infections and the associated risk factors.What do the results of this study add? In our study we found that vaginal infections were prevalent in 31.30% of reproductive-age women, with BV being the most prevalent (21.35%). We believe that our study makes a significant contribution to the literature because we report that BV appears to be the predominant cause of vaginitis, followed by VVC and TV. Risk factors for vaginitis include age, miscarriage and level of education.What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? This study aimed to determine the prevalence of these vaginal infections, BV, VVC and TV, and to assess the prevalence of vaginal infections and the associated risk factors. Health education interventions are recommended to raise women's awareness of vaginitis and its prevention.

BACKGROUND: Trichomonas vaginalis is not a notifiable disease in Australia in most states, resulting in limited Australian epidemiological studies. This study aimed to examine the positivity of T. vaginalis in women attending the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre (MSHC) and identify associated factors. METHODS: All women 16 years or older who were tested for T. vaginalis at MSHC from 2006 to 2019 were included. The diagnostic method changed from culture to nucleic acid amplification test in August 2018. The annual positivity of T. vaginalis was calculated. Because of the data completeness, we performed a generalized estimating equations multivariable logistic regression using data from 2011 to 2019 to examine factors associated with T. vaginalis positivity. RESULTS: From 2006 to 2019, 69,739 tests for T. vaginalis were conducted, and 294 tested positive (0.42%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.37%-0.47%). Approximately 60% of women tested reported symptoms. After adjusting for potential confounders including the change in diagnostic method, there was a 21% (95% CI, 12%-31%) annual increase in T. vaginalis positivity between 2011 and 2019. Women with concurrent syphilis had the highest odds of testing positive for T. vaginalis (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 21.55; 95% CI, 6.96-66.78), followed by women who had injected drugs in the last 12 months (aOR, 6.99; 95% CI, 4.11-11.87), were 35 years or older (aOR, 3.47; 95% CI, 2.26-5.35), or had concurrent chlamydia (aOR, 1.77; 95% CI, 1.05-2.99). CONCLUSIONS: The rising positivity of T. vaginalis at MSHC irrespective of change in diagnostic method suggests a concurrent community-wide rise in Melbourne. Given the rising positivity, testing informed by risk factors should be considered.

In response to the report by Abraham et al ., we present our observations of Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) detection in men tested at a public hospital laboratory in Melbourne, Australia, using a multiplex PCR. These studies provide valuable information about TV prevalence in urban communities.
